Poacher John Moon (Sam Rockwell) is hunting deer when a single shot changes his life forever. Hearing a tell-tale rustling in the bushes, he fires on instinct, but finds to his horror that he has shot a young girl. Upon finding a stash of money in her campsite, he decides to stage her death to look like suicide and take the cash for himself – but the hunter becomes the hunted as a shadowy cabal begin to track him down for his ill-gotten gains.
